“Luke,” I gasped, my hand slipping from his coat.

The car bounced as Marco hit the main road, the streetlights dancing across the ceiling of the car like pale ghosts.

My phone, tucked into the pocket of my coat, suddenly began to vibrate.

The screen lit up, casting a blue glow against the dark leather of the seat.

An unknown number was flashing on the screen.

Luke reached down and pulled the phone from my pocket, his brow furrowing as he looked at the caller ID.

“Who is it?” Marco asked from the front seat, his eyes darting to the rearview mirror.

Luke didn’t answer. He stared at the screen as it continued to buzz in his hand.

Luke swiped his thumb across the glass, but he did not answer.

He held the phone up to his ear, his face tightening.

“Speak,” Luke said, his voice cold.

The car interior was dark, save for the green glow of the dashboard clock.

I could hear a faint, static hiss on the other end of the line, but no one spoke.
