“I never emailed Isabel,” I said.

“I didn’t even have her email address until after I found out.”

“Then we need to find out who sent them,” Lydia said.

“Because if those emails are real, it looks like you set this whole thing up from the start.”

“I’ll call you back when I have the copies.”

She hung up.

I stared at the phone in my hand.

The room felt very cold.

I walked over to my laptop on the dining table and opened it.

I logged into my email account and went to the sent folder.

Nothing was there.

But then I looked at the trash folder.

There was a single deleted email from three months ago.

It was addressed to Isabel’s corporate email.

The subject line read: “Our little secret.”

I clicked on it.

My breath caught in my throat as I read the words on the screen.

The text was written in my voice, using my usual phrases, but I had never typed a single word of it.

Someone had been inside my account.

Someone had been planning this long before I ever walked out the door.
