Before I could process it, the screen flickered.

A new email notification popped up at the top of my inbox.

The sender was an anonymous address.

The subject line was simply: “I see you.”

I clicked the message.

There was no text, only a single attachment.

I downloaded the file.

It was a live video feed of the front porch of our Maine cottage.

The camera angle was high, looking down from the pine tree near the driveway.

In the center of the frame, a man in a dark coat was standing just outside the front door.

He was holding a small package.

He looked directly up at the camera.

It wasn’t Julian.

It wasn’t David.

The man raised his hand and knocked on the door.

The sound of the physical knock echoed through the quiet cottage a split second later.

My heart stopped.

I stood frozen in the middle of the room.

Harrison looked up from his blocks, his blue eyes wide.

“Mommy?” he asked.

The knock came again, louder this time.

I took a step toward the door, my hand shaking as I reached for the phone.
