“Look at the dates,” I said, leaning over the desk.

“These are unauthorized transfers,” Elena murmured, her finger tracing a line. “Here is the three million from your pre-IPO sale.”

“And there are more,” I said, pointing to a transaction from six months ago. “Fifty thousand dollars. I never authorized that.”

Elena picked up the black folder Harrison had dropped on the floor during his arrest.

She opened it and began sorting through the remaining documents.

I stood up and walked to the floor-to-ceiling windows.

Below, the streets of Minneapolis were quiet, slick with a thin layer of night frost.

I had thought getting Harrison out of my life would bring peace.

Instead, the air in the room felt heavier than ever.

“Claire,” Elena said.

Her voice had gone completely flat.

I turned around.

She was holding a thick, stapled document she had pulled from a hidden sleeve in the back of the folder.

“You need to look at this,” she said.

I walked back to the desk, the cold from the window pane still lingering on my skin.

The document was a loan application for twenty million dollars.
