Her protests faded down the hallway as the heavy doors swung shut.

The courtroom fell silent again, except for the soft hum of the ventilation system.

Vance remained standing, looking small and defeated.

“Mr. Vance, you are dismissed,” Judge Thomas said.

He gathered his papers with trembling hands and hurried out of the room without looking back.

The judge turned her attention to the documents on her bench.

She adjusted her glasses and read through several pages, her pen scratching against the paper.

The sound seemed incredibly loud in the empty room.

Finally, she looked down at us.

“We will now address the matter of custody for Lily and Owen Vale,” she said.

Hannah Brooks, the child services representative, stood up from her seat.

“Your Honor, the state has reviewed the new evidence and the background of Clara Vale,” Hannah said.

“And what is your recommendation, Ms. Brooks?” the judge asked.

“We recommend the immediate termination of Marissa Vale’s parental rights,” Hannah said.

“She has demonstrated a complete disregard for the safety and well-being of the children.”

The judge nodded slowly, making a note.
