“I agree,” Judge Thomas said.

“Marissa Vale has forfeited any claim to these children through her criminal actions and her abandonment of them at O’Hare Airport.”

She looked directly at Clara.

“Clara Vale, you are the biological aunt of the children.”

Clara stood up, her shoulders straight despite her trembling knees.

“Yes, Your Honor,” Clara said.

“Do you have the means and the desire to provide a stable home for Lily and Owen?” the judge asked.

“I have the desire, more than anything,” Clara said, her voice cracking.

“But my resources are limited, and Marissa took everything from our family estate.”

Ryker stood up then, his tall frame drawing the judge’s eyes.

“Your Honor, if I may,” Ryker said.

“Go ahead, Mr. Steel,” the judge replied.

“I have established a fully funded trust for the twins,” Ryker said.

“It will cover their education, medical needs, and daily living expenses until they are adults.”

He looked at Clara, then back at the judge.

“Furthermore, I am prepared to act as their co-guardian.”

“They will have a permanent home at my estate, and Clara will live there with them as their primary caregiver.”
