“We are here today regarding the emergency custody petition for the minors, Lily and Owen Vale,” she began.
“The court has petitions from the biological aunt, Clara Vale, and a motion for immediate removal from the state by the stepmother, Marissa Vale.”
Marissa’s lawyer stood up immediately.
“Your Honor,” Vance said, his voice smooth and practiced.
“My client is the legal guardian designated by the children’s late father. These children were taken from her custody without her consent.”
“That is not true,” Hannah Brooks said, standing up from her seat.
“Ms. Brooks, you have the floor,” the judge said, gesturing for her to proceed.
Hannah opened a thick manila folder and stepped toward the bench.
“Your Honor, we have evidence that Marissa Vale did not lose these children,” Hannah said.
“She abandoned them at Gate Seventeen of O’Hare International Airport on Tuesday afternoon.”
Marissa let out a sharp, scoffing laugh.
“That is absurd,” Marissa said, her voice echoing in the quiet room.
“I was looking for them. They wandered off.”
Judge Thomas leveled a cold gaze at Marissa.
“Speak only when you are addressed, Mrs. Vale,” the judge warned.
