My heart hammered against my ribs.
I reached out in the dark, my hand finding Owen’s worn teddy bear on the table, then the small, cold hand of Lily.
She was shivering.
Owen stepped in front of her, his small shoulders tense.
“Stay behind me, Lil,” he whispered.
Ryker did not look up from the screen, his face illuminated by the harsh blue glow of the glitching laptop.
“Marco, block the local network,” Ryker said, his voice flat and steady.
“Already on it,” Marco replied, his fingers moving over a small handheld device.
“They did not hack the laptop itself. They jammed the local cellular tower to force us offline.”
“What about the file?” I asked, my voice barely audible over the hum of the speakers.
“I mirrored the download to an encrypted local drive the second it started,” Ryker said.
He clicked a key, and the distorted lines on the screen resolved into clean black text.
The bank crest appeared once more, sharp and clear.
“Look at the transactions,” Ryker murmured.
