Dr. Marren looked at Harrison, his forehead shining with a sudden layer of sweat.
“What is she talking about?” Dr. Marren muttered.
I looked at Grace, feeling a sudden surge of hope in my chest.
She caught my eye and gave a tiny, almost imperceptible nod.
Matteo rubbed his shoulder where the orderly had pushed him, but his eyes were bright.
The wind outside gave another violent push, rattling the heavy glass panes of the drawing room.
The broad-shouldered orderly hesitated, his grip on my arm loosening slightly.
“Don’t listen to her,” Beatrice said, her voice losing its polite edge.
“She is trying to stall. Dr. Marren, proceed.”
“I wouldn’t do that if I were you,” Grace said, stepping closer to Dr. Marren.
She held up the documents, the official blue seal of the state court visible at the bottom.
“If any of you lay a finger on my client, you will be in violation of a standing court order.”
Harrison’s smile finally vanished.
He took a step toward Grace, his face darkening.
“What court order?” Harrison hissed.
“A temporary emergency injunction,” Grace said, her voice cool and steady.
