My breath caught in my throat.

“Grandmother?” I whispered, looking back at Daniel.

Daniel stopped typing immediately, his head snapping up to look at me.

“You need to listen to me carefully,” Evelyn said through the static of the line.

“They know where I am.”

“Who knows?” I asked, my hand trembling against the phone.

“Gavin’s people,” she said, her voice shaking with a fear I had never heard in her before. “They are outside the house in the cove.”

“They aren’t looking for the deeds anymore, Emily.”

“They are looking for me.”

Before I could ask another question, a loud crash echoed through the phone, followed by static.

The line went completely dead.

The silence in the office was heavy and suffocating.

I stared at the screen of my phone, the call disconnected.

“What is it?” Daniel asked, standing up from his desk.

“That was Evelyn,” I said, my voice barely audible. “She’s in danger.”

We both jumped as the office printer suddenly whirred to life in the corner.

The machine hadn’t been connected to any print job Daniel was working on.
