The Inheritance Hidden in the Shadows of My Family Betrayal
A single sheet of paper began to slowly slide out of the output tray.
I walked over to the machine, my hands shaking as I reached for the paper.
The page had a single image printed on it in high resolution.
It was a live security camera feed of the dark alleyway directly behind Daniel’s office.
In the center of the frame, a black sedan was parked with its headlights off.
The driver’s side door of the sedan was slowly swinging open.
“Daniel,” I whispered, pointing at the paper.
He leaned over my shoulder, his breath warm and rapid against my neck.
On the printed page, the driver’s door of the black sedan swung wide.
A man in a dark trench coat stepped out into the rain, his face obscured by a low-brimmed hat.
“We have to leave,” Daniel said, his voice flat with sudden adrenaline.
He reached down and snatched his laptop from the desk, jamming it into his leather briefcase.
“What about Evelyn?” I asked, my chest tightening. “The call cut out.”
“We can’t help her if we’re trapped in this basement,” Daniel said.
