The Inheritance Hidden in the Shadows of My Family Betrayal
I reached down and flipped the folder open.
The top page was a bank statement from an offshore account in the Cayman Islands.
It showed three transfers from First Star’s primary account, totaling four million dollars.
Each one bore his signature alongside Gavin’s.
“Daniel found the routing numbers yesterday,” I said.
“Daniel is an employee,” my father said, trying to find his old authority. “He has no right to audit my personal accounts.”
“These aren’t your personal accounts,” I said. “This is money stolen from the restaurant empire.”
He looked down at the carpet.
The library was quiet, save for the hum of the old refrigerator in the corner wet bar.
Outside, a sudden gust of coastal wind rattled the heavy glass panes of the French doors.
“Gavin promised he would pay it back,” my father whispered. “He said it was a temporary loan to secure the new lease downtown.”
“Gavin lied to you,” I said. “Just like he lied to me.”
“He had the signatures, Emily. I thought you had authorized it.”
“You knew my signature was forged, Dad. You watched him do it.”
