He didn’t deny it.
He slowly placed his glass on the green felt coaster.
His fingernails were yellowed, his skin dry and papery.
“What do you want?” he asked.
“I want what belongs to me,” I said.
I took a second document out of my bag.
It was a transfer of ownership form, prepared by my legal counsel.
“You have twenty-four hours to sign over your remaining shares in the company,” I said.
He looked up, his jaw dropping.
“All of them?” he asked. “That’s my entire retirement. I built those downtown locations.”
“Evelyn built them,” I corrected him. “You just managed them into the ground to fund Gavin’s debts.”
“I won’t do it,” he said, his voice rising slightly. “You can’t strip me of everything.”
“If those shares aren’t signed and notarized by five o’clock tomorrow, I walk this folder into the district attorney’s office.”
He flinched.
“They will arrest you before sunset, Dad.”
He stared at the transfer document.
“I am your father,” he whispered.
“And I was your daughter,” I said. “Before you let Gavin ruin my life.”
