“I didn’t order this, Margaret,” I said quietly. “My mother’s trust did.”
Sloane looked down at her tablet.
A red warning banner flashed across her screen, illuminating her face in a harsh light.
“The account is locked,” Sloane whispered, her voice losing its polished tone. “Graham, the five million is gone.”
“It can’t be gone,” Graham muttered, tapping frantically on his own phone. “It was a verified routing.”
“You told me the funds were secured,” Sloane said, her voice rising.
She turned to face him, her eyes wide with sudden panic.
“You said the Delaware account was outside the estate’s reach,” she said.
“Shut up, Sloane,” Margaret snapped, reaching the stage and grabbing Sloane’s arm.
“Don’t tell me to shut up,” Sloane said, pulling away. “I put my name on those project filings. My reputation is on the line.”
“Your reputation?” Graham said, his face turning red. “You are the one who insisted we move the money tonight.”
