She walked down the center aisle, her heels clicking rhythmically on the polished herringbone floor.

The heavy leather folder was tucked firmly under her arm.

“Before we begin the presentation,” Rachel said, her voice carrying clearly without the aid of a microphone.

Sloane frowned, her hand hovering over the presentation tablet. “Excuse me, this is a private foundation event.”

“Actually, it is a Hart family event,” Rachel replied, stopping at the edge of the stage.

She unzipped the folder and pulled out a document bearing the raised gold seal of the Hart estate.

Graham stepped forward, his eyes darting from Rachel to me in the shadows. “Rachel, whatever legal issues you have, we can discuss them in the office tomorrow.”

“There is nothing left to discuss, Graham,” Rachel said.

She turned to face the room, raising her voice so every donor could hear.

“As the designated legal representative of the Hart estate, I am executing the immediate activation of the 2018 Trust Amendment.”

Margaret stood up so fast her chair scraped loudly against the floor. “That amendment is obsolete.”
