“Where are you?” I asked, keeping my voice low so it wouldn’t carry through the heavy door.
“I’m in a motel near San Pedro,” he said.
“I don’t have much time.”
“You need to turn yourself in, Julian,” I said. “The FBI has the Swiss documents.”
“They know about the real Tyler and the phenobarbital.”
There was a long silence on the other end of the line.
I could hear the distant sound of traffic and a foghorn blowing in the harbor.
“I didn’t kill him, Natalie,” he said.
“I swear to you.”
“He was already dead when Victoria’s people brought me in.”
“I was just a kid who looked like him and wanted to escape the streets.”
“You lied to me for five years,” I said.
“You married me under a dead man’s name.”
“I did what I had to do to survive,” he said.
“But Victoria is going to kill me.”
“And Chloe is going to let her.”
“What do you mean?” I asked.
“Chloe has the physical keys to the Nassau account,” he said.
“She’s been working with Victoria behind my back.”
