“She is my daughter,” he said, his voice rising in pitch. “I have parental rights, Tessa. You can’t just shut me out because we’re having problems.”

“You forged my signature on a deed transfer, Grant,” I said, my voice cold. “You abandoned me while I was in labor.”

“That’s a lie,” he said, though he didn’t look me in the eye. “That was a business misunderstanding. We can talk about that later.”

Naomi stepped forward, tapping the screen of her phone to answer the call.

“This is Naomi Pierce,” she said into the receiver, her eyes locked on Grant. “Yes, Officer. He is currently at the third-floor neonatal unit. He is attempting to breach a secure medical area.”

Grant’s face turned a deep, angry red.

“You’re calling the cops on the father of your child?” he hissed, taking a step toward Naomi.

General Vale stepped directly into his path, his tall frame completely cutting off Grant’s line of sight.

“Mr. Holloway,” the General said, his voice low and dangerous. “You will step away from the counselor, and you will step away from this nursery.”
