Derek looked around, his eyes wild and bloodshot.

“You think you won?” Derek spat, looking at me.

“You think this man cares about you? He is a monster.”

“He is a man of his word,” I said.

Vincent looked down at Derek as if he were nothing more than a stain on the driveway.

“The federal authorities are already on their way,” Vincent said.

“Not just for Marcus, but for you.”

“I had Gianna send over your personal files as well,” Vincent added.

“The forged deeds, the bank statements, the evidence of what you did to Clara’s father.”

Derek’s face went completely white under the yellow courtyard lights.

“You don’t have proof,” Derek whispered.

“We have the original ledger,” I said.

“The one my father kept in the safe before you ran me out of the house.”

“It is already in the hands of the federal prosecutor,” Vincent said.

Derek reached slowly into his coat pocket.

“I am not going back to prison,” Derek muttered.

“Keep your hands where I can see them,” Gianna warned.

The red dot of a laser sight appeared on Derek’s chest.
