The Crimson Seal and the Shadow of the Obsidian Lounge
“Input the numbers.”
The guard nodded and walked toward the heavy steel doors of the container.
He began punching the numbers into the digital keypad mounted on the latch.
The keypad beeped with each press.
My heart was hammering against my ribs so hard I thought Derek could hear it.
I tightened my grip on the small steel tool in my sleeve.
The wind howled between the metal containers.
The guard at the door paused.
“It’s yellow,” the guard called out. “It’s processing.”
Derek leaned forward slightly, his grip on my shoulder loosening just a fraction.
“Does it work?” Derek shouted.
The digital keypad gave a loud, high-pitched chime.
The light on the screen turned a solid, bright blue.
“It’s open,” the guard said, pulling the heavy steel handle down.
The massive metal door creaked open, revealing a dark interior.
But it was not empty.
Inside the container, a small red light was blinking rapidly on a black console.
The blinking light cast a strange glow across the gravel.
Derek frowned, staring at the red light.
“What is that?” Derek whispered.
