He wore a dark suit and had a radio earpiece tucked into his ear.
“Boss, we have a situation,” the man said, his voice tense.
This was Leo, Vincent’s head of security.
“What is it, Leo?” Vincent asked, not looking pleased with the interruption.
“Our scouts in the city just reported in,” Leo said, glancing at me with a frown.
“Derek was seen meeting with Victor Borza’s people at a diner near the canal.”
Vincent’s posture went entirely rigid.
“Borza?” Vincent muttered, his voice dropping an octave.
“Yes, boss,” Leo said. “The word is they are talking about our shipping routes.”
“Derek is offering them information on our schedules in exchange for their backing.”
“He wants to hit our supply lines to put pressure on us.”
I felt the color drain from my face as I looked between the two men.
“He is going to start a war,” I whispered.
Vincent stood up slowly, his face hardening into an expression of pure, icy rage.
“Let him try,” Vincent said, his voice dangerously quiet.
“But Borza’s people are ruthless,” I said, my hands trembling again. “They will kill your men.”
