I walked over to the desk, looking down at the manila folder Darrow had thrown down earlier.

“What is in here?” I asked, pointing to the folder.

Darrow did not look up from his writing.

“That is the paperwork Beatrice gave me to store in my office safe back then,” Darrow said. “She told me to keep it safe in case the police started digging into the family accounts.”

I reached out and opened the folder.

Inside were copies of financial audits, bank statements, and legal agreements.

I flipped through the pages, my eyes scanning the dry legal jargon.

Toward the back of the folder, a document printed on heavy parchment paper caught my eye.

It was a life insurance policy.

I pulled it out, my fingers trembling as I read the names printed at the top.

The policy was written under my name, Audrey Langford.

But as I looked closer at the signature line, my breath caught.

The signature was a clumsy forgery of my handwriting.

I looked at the beneficiary named on the policy.

It was not Liam.

It was Beatrice Langford.
