“I didn’t know it would spread so fast,” Darrow stammered. “The old wood, the tapestries… it went up in seconds.”
Liam stood up, his tall frame looming over the desk.
“You are going to write that down,” Liam said. “You are going to sign a confession, and we are taking it to Detective Holt.”
Darrow looked defeated, his head sinking into his chest.
“I will sign whatever you want,” Darrow said. “Just lift the hold. If I lose those ships, my creditors will ruin me.”
Liam pulled a notepad and a pen from his drawer and slid them across the desk.
Darrow picked up the pen with shaking fingers and began to write.
I watched him write, the scratch of the pen on paper the only sound in the room.
My mind was spinning, trying to connect the pieces of Beatrice’s plan.
