“Emma Parker?” he asked.

“Who are you?” Victoria asked, standing up.

“I’m a process server,” the man said.

He walked over to the bed and dropped the envelope onto my lap.

“You’ve been served,” he said.

He turned and walked out as quickly as he had entered.

Victoria grabbed the envelope and ripped it open.

Her face went pale as she read the first page.

“What is it?” Laura asked, leaning over her shoulder.

Victoria looked at me, her eyes filled with grave concern.

“It’s an emergency ex-parte petition for temporary custody,” Victoria said.

“Filed by whom?” Thomas asked.

“Ryan and Margaret Parker,” Victoria said. “They are claiming you are suffering from severe postpartum psychosis.”

I stared at her, the room suddenly spinning.

“And they’ve requested an immediate psychological evaluation by a court-appointed doctor,” Victoria added.

“Can they do that?” Laura cried.

“They already did,” Victoria said.

My phone, sitting on the bedside table, began to buzz.

The screen lit up with an unknown number.

I picked it up, my fingers trembling so hard I nearly dropped it.

I pressed the receiver to my ear.
