“Emma,” a voice purred.

It was Margaret.

“I hope you’re resting well,” she said. “The doctor will be there in twenty minutes.”

I couldn’t speak.

“We are only doing what is best for the baby,” Margaret said. “You clearly aren’t in your right mind.”

“I am fine,” I managed to choke out.

“The court will decide that,” Margaret said, her voice dripping with artificial sympathy. “Don’t make this harder than it has to be.”

The line went dead.

I looked at Victoria, my eyes wide with panic.

“They’re coming,” I said.

“Who is coming?” Laura asked.

“A doctor,” I said. “Margaret said a doctor is coming in twenty minutes.”

Victoria closed her laptop and stood up.

“We need to block this,” Victoria said. “I need to get a judge on the phone right now.”

Thomas stood by the door, looking out into the hallway.

“We have a problem,” Thomas said.

“What?” Laura asked.

“I see Dr. Harrison down the hall,” Thomas said. “He’s walking this way with two men in suits.”

Dr. Harrison was the chief of medicine, the one Ryan said his mother had spoken to.
