Victor’s hands curled into tight fists at his sides.
“She didn’t have the authority,” he said.
“Her name was on the account, Victor,” I interrupted.
“You put it there to keep my lawyers from finding it during our asset discovery.”
He finally looked at me, his eyes wide and bloodshot.
“Claire, please,” he said.
“We can talk about this.”
“There is nothing left to talk about,” I said.
I reached into my handbag and pulled out a small, heavy silver key.
I laid it on the marble reception desk between us.
“That is the key to the safe-deposit box at Northern Trust,” I said.
“The one with my mother’s jewelry.”
“I took it out this morning.”
Victor stared at the key.
“What are you doing?” he asked.
“I am leaving you, Victor,” I said.
“My attorney is filing the petition for dissolution of marriage at nine o’clock tomorrow morning.”
The assistant behind Evelyn made a brief note on a tablet.
Victor shook his head, his face contorting.
