He turned and pulled the door open, stepping out into the bright, fluorescent hallway without another word.
The door swung shut behind him, leaving Nathan and me alone in the quiet room.
“Are you okay?” Nathan asked, walking over to the window.
“No,” I said. “But I will be.”
Nathan looked out at the gray sky, his shoulders dropping slightly as the tension left him.
“He’s going straight to the office,” Nathan said. “He thinks he can still talk his way out of this.”
“Let him try,” I said.
“Evelyn won’t let him past the security desk,” Nathan said. “She’s already revoked his badge access.”
I leaned back against the thin hospital pillow, my body aching from the stress of the last hour.
On the bedside table, right next to the blue folder, my phone began to vibrate against the wood.
The screen lit up with an incoming call from an unknown Miami area code.
I slid my finger across the glass and pressed the phone to my ear.
“Claire,” a woman’s voice said, sharp and hurried.
