The Cost of Silence and the Fall of Hayes Development
“Why are you calling me?” I asked, my voice flat.
“Victor is on his way to the Seattle office,” she said. “He called me from the road. He sounds completely unhinged, Claire.”
I looked at Nathan, who was watching me closely from the hospital window.
“He is unhinged,” I said.
“The board is already convening a special session,” Brooke said, her breath catching. “Evelyn Price called my legal counsel an hour ago. They are freezing everything.”
“Good,” I said.
“I didn’t know about the offshore transfers, Claire,” she pleaded. “I swear to you, I only handled the local marketing accounts.”
She was already trying to save herself.
“Tell it to Evelyn,” I said, and hung up.
I pulled the thin hospital blanket off my legs and swung them over the edge of the bed.
“What are you doing?” Nathan asked, stepping forward to assist me.
“I need my clothes,” I said. “We’re going to the office.”
“The doctor said you need to stay under observation,” he said.
“I’ve stayed here long enough,” I said, my feet touching the cold linoleum floor.
