I leaned my head back against the leather headrest, closing my eyes.
“I thought you were going to kill him,” I said quietly.
“Death is too quick for a man like Marcus,” Damiano said.
I opened my eyes and looked at his profile, silhouetted against the passing streetlights.
“Then what did you do?” I asked.
Damiano adjusted the cuff of his dark wool coat.
“Two hours ago, my associates delivered three encrypted drives to the office of the United States Attorney,” he said.
I sat up a little straighter, watching his face.
“What was on them?”
“Everything,” Damiano said. “Ten years of offshore transactions, bank routing numbers, and signed contracts.”
He turned his head to look at me, his eyes dark and steady.
“We included the names of every politician he bribed, every judge he paid, and every zoning commissioner he threatened.”
“Will they actually prosecute him?” I asked, remembering how easily Marcus had bypassed the local police.
“They have no choice,” Damiano said. “The files were also sent directly to the major news outlets.”
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small silver case, sliding it open.
