“You are violating your bail,” I said.

He let out a dry, hacking laugh that ended in a cough.

“Bail does not matter anymore,” he said.

“The police are already looking for you,” I said.

“Let them look,” he spat. “They won’t find anything if I get what I came for.”

“There is nothing left for you there,” I said.

“Do not lie to me,” he said, his voice rising. “Abigail’s ledger. The physical book.”

I kept my eyes fixed on the dark road ahead.

“She kept the offline keys in it,” he said. “The cold storage codes for the Caymans.”

“You will never find it,” I said.

“I will tear this house apart board by board,” he said.

The line went dead with a sharp click.

I lowered the phone to my lap, the screen casting a pale blue glow over my knuckles.

“He is there,” I said to Ana.

Ana gripped the steering wheel tighter, her knuckles turning white.

“He went to the ranch,” she said.

“Yes,” I said. “He is looking for the physical ledger.”

“He knows the digital files are useless without the recovery keys,” Ana said.
