She accelerated, the sedan surging forward on the wet asphalt.

“Is the ledger actually there?” I asked.

“Abigail kept it in the wall safe in her study,” Ana said.

“Does he know the combination?” I asked.

“No,” Ana said. “But he has tools, and he is desperate.”

“He will destroy the evidence if he finds it,” I said.

“Worse,” Ana said. “He will transfer the funds and disappear.”

We drove in silence for several miles.

The windshield wipers swept left and right, clearing the gray sheet of water.

The headlights of oncoming trucks blinded me momentarily before plunging us back into the dark.

I looked at the dashboard clock.

It was nearly midnight.

“How far are we?” I asked.

“Thirty minutes,” Ana said. “If the highway stays clear.”

My phone buzzed in my hand again.

It was a text from an unknown number, but I knew it was Yasmin.

*He is out of his mind, Alana. Do not go there.*

I stared at the words until they blurred.

“Yasmin texted,” I said.

“What does she want?” Ana asked.

“She is warning me away,” I said.
