“We need proof that you are of sound mind,” Ana said.
“And we need proof of their conspiracy.”
She reached into her briefcase and pulled out a small, black recording device.
“I have been tracing the financial transfers between Mark and Dr. Vale,” she said.
“But it isn’t enough to stop the legal machinery they’ve set in motion.”
“We need someone on the inside.”
“Who?” I asked. “Gillian?”
“No,” Ana said. “Gillian is too foolish to realize what her father is doing.”
“It’s Yasmin.”
I stared at her in disbelief.
“Yasmin?” I said. “She hates me.”
“She hates losing more than she hates you,” Ana said.
“She has realized that Mark is becoming unstable.”
“She knows that if Mark goes down, she goes down with him.”
Ana set the recording device on the bedside table.
“She contacted me yesterday,” Ana whispered.
“She used a public payphone in Fremont.”
“What did she want?” I asked.
“An agreement,” Ana said.
“She wants total immunity from prosecution.”
“In exchange, she is offering to testify against Mark.”
“She has documents, Alana.”
“Documents that prove Mark and Dr. Vale have been planning this for months.”
