“And the financial records showing the offshore accounts Mark set up to pay Vale.”
I looked at the closed ledger, then at the recording device.
The storm outside seemed to shake the very foundation of the building.
“Can we trust her?” I asked.
“We have to,” Ana said.
“Because right now, she is the only card we have left to play.”
The door handle to the hospital room suddenly began to turn.
Ana quickly slid the ledger back into her briefcase and snapped the locks shut.
She shoved the recording device into her pocket.
The door swung open.
A nurse walked in, carrying a small plastic tray with a paper cup.
She looked at us suspiciously.
“Visiting hours ended twenty minutes ago,” she said.
“I need to administer the patient’s evening medication.”
I looked at the paper cup in her hand.
Inside was a single blue pill.
My heart began to race.
“What is that?” I asked.
“A sedative,” the nurse said, her voice completely flat.
