“Substance abuse?” I gasped. “I don’t even drink.”
“The toxicology screen from your admission today will show elevated levels of a prescription sedative,” Dr. Vale said.
He looked at me over the top of his glasses.
“Your father was kind enough to provide the bottle we found in your overnight bag.”
My mind raced back to the ranch, to the glass of water Yasmin had handed me before I collapsed.
They had planned this from the very beginning.
“That was planted,” I said. “My stepmother poisoned me.”
“You see?” Dr. Vale said to Ana. “The delusions of persecution are deeply entrenched.”
“This is a conspiracy to commit fraud,” Ana said, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. “I will have your license by tomorrow morning, Vale.”
“You can try,” Dr. Vale said smoothly. “But administrative hearings take months.”
He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees.
“In the meantime, the county probate court will receive my certified psychiatric evaluation.”
“And what exactly does that do?” I asked, cold sweat dampening my hospital gown.
“It triggers an automatic hold,” Dr. Vale said. “Your legal capacity will be suspended pending a full competency hearing.”
