He paused, letting the words hang in the sterile air.

He looked toward the window, where the rain was beginning to smear against the glass.

“The Sonoma agave ranch, the liquid assets, the investment portfolios—everything Abigail left you will remain locked in probate.”

“You’re blackmailing me,” I said.

He reached into his folder and pulled out a single sheet of paper.

“This is a voluntary admission and conservatorship designation.”

He slid it onto the bedside table, right next to my plastic cup of water.

“If you sign this, we can avoid the public court hearings.”

“You will be placed in a private, comfortable facility in the foothills for a few weeks.”

“And your father will assume temporary control of the estate to manage the taxes and upkeep.”

“Once he has structured the assets, you will be discharged with a clean bill of mental health.”
