“You need to be examined, Alana,” Ana said. “Dr. Vale’s sedatives are still in your system, and we need a clear medical report for the prosecution.”

She helped me sit up, wrapping a thick wool blanket around my shivering shoulders.

The comforting smell of lavender and old paper clung to the fabric.

“There is something else,” Ana murmured, leaning closer so the remaining officers near the door couldn’t hear us.

I looked at her, trying to focus my blurry vision on her face.

“Abigail kept secrets,” Ana said. “More than we ever realized.”

“What kind of secrets?” I asked, my voice barely audible over the hum of the police vehicles outside.

“When we decrypted the digital vault tonight, we found a secondary directory,” Ana whispered.

She checked over her shoulder toward the hallway before continuing.

“It’s a second, hidden ledger,” she said. “It details illegal offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands.”

My chest tightened, a cold knot forming in my stomach. “Whose accounts?”

“They are tied directly to Mark’s shipping businesses,” Ana said. “But the transactions go back thirty years.”

“Abigail knew about them?” I asked.
