Celeste did not look up immediately.

When she finally raised her head and removed her sunglasses, I saw the dark circles under her eyes.

Her makeup was smudged at the corners, and her lips were dry.

“You took your time,” Celeste said, her voice thin and raspy.

“We had to carry an infant two blocks in this heat,” Grace said, her tone sharp and professional. “Let’s not waste time, Ms. Vale.”

Celeste looked at Lily, then quickly averted her gaze, her jaw tightening.

“Adrian is going to lose everything,” Celeste said, leaning across the table. “His mother is going to strip him of the executive title by tonight.”

“We are aware of Margaret’s plans,” I said. “We were just in the room.”

Celeste let out a sharp, bitter laugh.

“Margaret only knows about the domestic assets,” Celeste said. “She thinks she has him trapped in her little web.”

“And she doesn’t?” Grace asked, her pen already hovering over a yellow legal pad.

Celeste reached into her large leather tote bag.

She pulled out a slim, matte-black external hard drive and placed it on the table.
