The Cold Legacy of the Family He Sacrificed Everything to Protect
“That is a lie,” Vanessa called out, her voice echoing in the quiet room.
“Order in the court,” Judge Vance warned, glaring down at her.
I continued, showing the photographic evidence of the locks on the outside of the girls’ bedroom doors.
“The keys to these locks were found in Vanessa Caldwell’s personal purse last night,” I said.
“But the financial theft and the child abuse were only steps to secure a larger goal,” I said, turning to face Vanessa directly.
“Vanessa Caldwell sought total control of the Caldwell family fortune, which was legally bound to Claire Caldwell and her heirs.”
I opened the next file folder on my screen, labelled *Toxicology Report: Claire Caldwell*.
“Four years ago, Claire Caldwell died of what was ruled a sudden cardiac arrest.”
“Her body was exhumed three weeks ago under a confidential court order.”
“The secondary autopsy was performed by the state medical examiner’s office, completely independent of the local coroner.”
The courtroom was so quiet I could hear the faint hum of the air vents.
“The results show lethal concentrations of potassium chloride and a heavy sedative in Claire’s tissue samples,” I said.
