“Then someone used your digital signature,” Marcus said.

“Where did the money go?” I asked.

“It’s being routed through a shell company in the Cayman Islands,” Marcus said. “The account name is Apex Holdings.”

“I’ve never heard of it,” Benjamin said.

“I’m tracing the registration of that shell company now,” Marcus said, his thumb scrolling rapidly. “The server footprint is routed through a private node in Munich.”

The floorboards directly outside the library door groaned.

The doorknob began to turn, very slowly.

The brass handle rotated in the darkness.

Marcus raised his weapon, aiming it at the door.

Benjamin stepped in front of me, his arm shielding my shoulder.

The door swung open.

A beam of bright white light from a heavy tactical flashlight hit us directly in the eyes.

I shielded my face with my hand.

“Lower your weapon, Marcus,” a voice commanded from behind the light.

It was Detective Daniel Pierce.

He stepped into the room, holding his badge in his left hand and his service weapon in his right.

Behind him, two uniform officers stood in the hallway, their flashlights sweeping the library.
