Reyes walked up, his black boots stopping right next to us.
He knelt down, holding a small notepad.
“Where were they going, Sarah?” Reyes asked.
“The private hangar,” she said, coughing. “Walter has a twin-engine plane registered under his shell company. They are going to fly to Canada.”
Reyes looked up at his agents.
“Call the airport authority,” Reyes ordered into his radio. “Ground all private flights. And tell the state police to block the access roads.”
He looked back at Sarah.
“We need to get her inside,” I said, touching Jake’s shoulder. “She’s freezing.”
Jake nodded and carried her toward the house, his face set like stone.
I opened the front door, the warm air of the hallway washing over us.
We laid Sarah on the living room sofa.
I ran to the kitchen and brought back a heavy wool blanket and a mug of warm water.
Owen was still asleep in the portable crib near the kitchen, completely unaware of the chaos outside.
Sarah took the mug with trembling hands, her eyes wide and terrified.
