“They knew the military was looking into the trust,” she whispered, looking at Jake. “Your father had a contact inside the base. Someone named Vance.”
Jake’s jaw clenched.
“Captain Vance,” Jake said.
“Yes,” Sarah said, nodding quickly. “He was the one who helped falsify the death certificate. Walter paid him five hundred thousand dollars from your military trust.”
Reyes entered the living room, his phone pressed to his ear.
He listened for a moment, then looked at Jake.
“The state police just intercepted Walter’s luxury sedan three miles from the airfield,” Reyes said.
My heart leaped into my throat.
“Did they get them?” I asked.
“They got Walter and Patricia,” Reyes said. “Logan wasn’t in the car. He fled on foot into the woods near the highway.”
“He won’t survive long in this blizzard,” Jake said.
“We have search dogs on the way,” Reyes replied. “But more importantly, the financial warrants just cleared.”
Reyes tapped his phone screen.
“As of five minutes ago, every single bank account associated with Walter, Patricia, and Logan has been frozen,” Reyes said.
