Reclaiming My Home After My Family Declared Me Dead Overseas
Jake ran toward the figure in the snow, his heavy boots kicking up white powder.
I didn’t stay behind the SUV.
I ran right after him, pulling my coat tight against the biting wind.
“Hannah, stay back,” Reyes called out, but his voice was swallowed by the storm.
Jake knelt in the snow beside the woman.
He gently rolled her onto her back.
I gasped when the light from the headlights hit her face.
It was Sarah, Logan’s girlfriend.
Her lip was cut, and a dark bruise was already swelling around her left eye.
She was shivering violently, her thin jacket offering no protection from the sub-zero air.
“Jake,” she whispered, her teeth chattering so hard the words barely formed. “They’re gone. They took everything.”
Jake lifted her up, his strong arms wrapping around her shaking frame.
“Who took everything, Sarah?” he asked, his voice calm but demanding.
“Logan,” she sobbed, clutching at Jake’s winter coat. “And Walter. They argued. I tried to stop Logan from taking the briefcase, and Walter hit me. He told Logan to leave me behind.”
