Reclaiming My Home After My Family Declared Me Dead Overseas
There was no signal in the deep valley where the cabin sat.
“No service,” Jake said, putting the phone back.
Suddenly, a loud, sharp vibration cut through the quiet room.
It wasn’t Jake’s phone.
It was my phone, sitting in the outer pocket of my diaper bag.
I pulled it out, the screen glowing bright in the dim cabin light.
An unknown number was flashing on the screen.
I looked up at Jake, my hand freezing.
“Answer it,” Jake said softly, stepping closer to me.
I pressed the button and put the phone to my ear.
“Hannah,” a voice said on the other end.
It was Logan.
His voice sounded shaky, the false confidence he usually wore completely gone.
“Logan,” I said, my voice cold.
“Is Jake with you?” Logan asked, his breathing shallow.
“What do you want, Logan?” I asked.
Jake leaned in close, his ear near the speaker so he could hear every word.
“Tell him I want to make a deal,” Logan said, a nervous edge to his laugh.
“A deal?” I said.
