“I know what you took from the Sector Four office,” Logan said. “I know about the backup drive.”

He paused, and I could hear the sound of wind howling in the background on his end of the line.

“Listen to me carefully,” Logan said. “Tell Jake that if he destroys that drive and calls off his federal investigator friend…”

“Why would he do that?” I asked.

“Because if he does,” Logan said, “I will convince Walter to sign the deed of the house back over to you.”

He took a sharp breath before continuing.

“And we will drop the custody petition for the baby,” Logan added. “You get your life back, Hannah. You get your home.”

“And if we don’t?” I asked, my grip tightening on the phone.

“If you don’t,” Logan said, his voice dropping to a low, desperate whisper, “Walter is going to release the desertion files to the press tonight.”

He let the threat hang in the air for a second.

“Jake will be a wanted man by morning,” Logan said. “And you will never see that baby again.”
