“Hello?” Landon’s voice answered, sounding relaxed and slightly slurry.

My heart hammered against my ribs at the sound of his voice.

“Landon Bellamy?” Detective Miller’s voice was firm and official.

“Yeah, who is this?” Landon asked, his tone instantly becoming defensive.

“This is Detective Miller with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.”

There was a brief pause on the other end of the line.

“Is this about Marissa?” Landon sighed heavily. “Look, whatever she told you, she is exaggerating.”

“Mr. Bellamy, I need you to listen to me very carefully,” Detective Miller said.

“Your son is currently in the neonatal intensive care unit.”

“And we have a warrant being processed for your arrest.”

I closed my eyes, the weight of the moment pressing down on my shoulders.

“What?” Landon’s voice lost its relaxed tone, replaced by sudden anger. “That is ridiculous.”

“She is fine, the baby is fine, we just needed a break.”

“We have the video footage from your home security system, Mr. Bellamy,” the detective said.

“We know you took her keys and her phone.”

“You need to board the next available flight back to Charlotte.”
