“I am not doing that,” Landon snapped. “This is our vacation.”
“You do not understand how hard she makes things.”
I opened my eyes and looked at the speaker, the betrayal cutting deep into my chest.
“Landon,” I whispered, unable to keep quiet any longer.
The line went silent for a second.
“Marissa?” Landon’s voice turned sharp and accusatory. “What did you do?”
“What did you do to my mother’s reputation?”
“She is sitting right here, and she is hysterical because the bank just notified her of a police inquiry.”
“You are ruining our family over a stupid misunderstanding,” Landon yelled over the static.
“Your son almost died, Landon,” I said, my voice stronger than I expected.
“He is in an incubator right now.”
“He did not have oxygen because you locked me in.”
“Oh, please,” Landon scoffed. “You have neighbors. You could have walked outside.”
“You are just trying to punish me for leaving.”
“Mr. Bellamy,” Detective Miller interrupted. “If you do not cooperate, we will involve federal authorities for international flight to avoid prosecution.”
“You have twelve hours to present yourself at the precinct.”
