Outside, the North Carolina sky began to turn a deep, bruised purple as evening settled over Charlotte.

Sarah came back inside, her expression grim.

“Miller is at your house now,” she said.

“They are setting up a perimeter to secure the property.”

“And the cameras?” I asked.

“He’s looking for the recording hub right now,” she said.

Before I could ask anything else, the backup phone in my hand rang again.

The screen didn’t show Landon’s name this time.

It was Courtney.

I looked up at Sarah.

“It’s his sister,” I said.

“Answer it,” Sarah said, her voice dropping. “Put it on speaker.”

I swiped the screen and pressed the icon.

“Courtney?” I said.

A shrill, panicked voice exploded from the speaker.

“Marissa! What is going on at your house?”

I could hear car engines idling and the faint squawk of a police radio in the background of her call.

“I’m in your driveway,” Courtney stammered.

“There are three police cars parked on the grass.”

“Two officers are standing on your porch, and some man in a suit is trying to get inside!”

“Where are you?”
