“Where is the baby?”

I gripped the edge of the bedside table to keep my hand from shaking.

“I’m at the hospital, Courtney,” I said. “Rowan is in the pediatric unit.”

“The hospital?” she shrieked.

“Why are you at the hospital?”

“Landon told me you were just resting at home because you were tired!”

“He told me to come by and drop off some formula and check on you because you were being difficult.”

I felt a cold wave of anger wash over my chest.

“Landon took my car keys, Courtney,” I said, keeping my voice as flat as possible.

“He took my phone and left me with no way to get help.”

“Rowan was severely dehydrated.”

“He needed emergency medical care, and they locked me in.”

There was a long, heavy silence on the other end of the line.

I could hear the faint sound of heavy boots crunching on gravel near her car.

“Ma’am, I need you to roll down your window and step out of the vehicle,” a distant voice said.

“Courtney?” I asked.

“Marissa, the cop is talking to me,” she whispered, her voice trembling.
