“They record everything when they detect motion,” I said. “The storage hub is in the hallway closet, hidden behind the blankets.”

“If they are still plugged in, they saw everything Patricia and Landon did before they left.”

“They saw Patricia pry my fingers off my car keys.”

Sarah stood up quickly.

“I need to call Detective Miller immediately,” she said.

She stepped out of the room, her phone already at her ear.

I was left alone with Rowan.

I stood up and walked over to his plastic bassinet.

The blue light gave his pale skin a strange, ghostly tint.

He looked so small under the canopy, a tiny IV taped to his foot.

I reached through the side opening and touched his warm, soft toes.

“I’m here,” I whispered to him.

“I’m not going anywhere.”

The minutes crawled by like hours in that quiet hospital room.

A nurse came in to check Rowan’s vitals, her soft rubber shoes squeaking on the linoleum.

She smiled at me, but it was a look of deep pity that made my stomach turn.
