She wrote quickly in her notebook, her pen scratching against the paper.

“He mentioned Courtney,” she said without looking up. “His sister?”

“Yes,” I said, my voice cracking. “Courtney lives about twenty minutes away in Matthews.”

“She usually does whatever Patricia tells her to do.”

“Did she know about Landon leaving you behind?”

“I don’t think so,” I said, rubbing my aching forehead.

“Patricia probably told her some version of the story where I was being difficult.”

“They always make me out to be the dramatic one.”

Sarah nodded, her eyes fixed on her notes.

“Tell me about the house,” she said. “The security.”

“Landon installed smart cameras last year,” I said.

My heart gave a small, sharp thud as I recalled the day he put them in.

“There’s a camera at the front door, one in the living room, and one in the kitchen.”

“He has the app on his phone and checks it constantly.”

“He told me it was to keep me safe from intruders.”

Sarah stopped writing and looked at me.

“Did those cameras record today?” she asked.
