“Landon’s sister, Vanessa,” I said, looking at the clock on the wall.

It was 1:15 PM.

“Before they left, Patricia mentioned that Vanessa would be coming by.”

“She was supposed to check on me later this afternoon.”

“She has her own key.”

“What time was she scheduled to arrive?” Officer Miller asked, his pen ready.

“Patricia said around four o’clock,” I said.

“She was supposed to bring some groceries.”

“I think she was really coming to make sure I hadn’t left.”

“Or to make sure I wasn’t making a scene.”

Officer Miller nodded, writing quickly on his notepad.

“We will have officers at the house before she arrives,” Miller said.

“We need to secure that key and document who enters the property.”

“Can I stay here with Rowan?” I asked, looking toward the bassinet.

“For now, yes,” Sarah said.

“The hospital has placed a temporary hold on the discharge.”

“Until our investigation is complete, Rowan cannot leave this facility.”

“And Landon cannot have contact with him.”

A small wave of relief washed over me, but it was quickly replaced by a cold dread.
